Volunteering with Our Daily Bread
Thank you for your interest in volunteering your time at Our Daily Bread. In order to assure that your volunteer experience is a pleasant one, please review the policies and procedures below before scheduling your hours.
Age Policy
- As of June 1, 2011 there are no new volunteer opportunities for anyone under the age of 16.
- Anyone under the age of 16 presently serving as a volunteer at ODB as of June 1, 2011, may continue to serve with the approval of the Chef and/or the Executive Director.In addition, parent(s) or legal guardian(s) must sign a waiver releasing ODB/St. Andrew Presbyterian Church of any personal injury that may occur during this service. The underage volunteer must be supervised by an accompanying adult at all times.
- Each volunteer 16 or 17 years of age must be accompanied by an adult volunteer.
Groups
- Due to space limitations in our facility, volunteer opportunities for groups are only available one Saturday a month for Snack Pack preparation.
- If members of a group fulfill the age requirements, they may schedule themselves as individual volunteers.
Community Service Policy
- We DO NOT certify or otherwise sign off on court appointed community service hours.
- Community Service hours for education purposes will be signed off on only with express consent of the Executive Director prior to hours being served.
Volunteer Kitchen Support Policies
- Volunteers should come dressed in clean comfortable clothing.
Short sleeve shirts, long pants and closed toed shoes are highly recommended. - Aprons are provided
- Short-shorts, flip-flops and tube tops are not permitted.
- Long hair should be pulled back off the face, or a hairnet must be worn.
Beards should be neatly trimmed. - Cell phone usage is not permitted in the kitchen. If there is an emergency, please notify the Chef and step out of the kitchen to take the call.
- Volunteers may eat in the kitchen only with the permission and at the discretion of the Chef/Kitchen Manager.

- In-Kind Donation Tracking - In-House
- Donation Pick Up
Outside the Kitchen
- Special Services
- Assist clients in filling out SNAP (Food stamps, Medicaid, TANF) form
- Refer to TAFB Social worker for extended assistance
- Assist clients and refer to appropriate social service agencies as needed
- Hand out client mail
- Assist with donation receiving and documentation
- Hand out hygiene items to clients as needed on a daily basis
- Weekend Snack Packs
- Assist with assembling and handing out weekly snack packs
- Office Assistance
- Assist with various forms of data entry
- Assist with periodic mailings
- Filing and mail pick up
- Board Committees
- Volunteer Services: Coordinates volunteers, Holiday Party and Volunteer Appreciation Event
- Fundraising: Assist with planning a selected single event (Denton Arts and Jazz Festival; Will Play for Food; Hoops for the Hungry; Hunger Awareness Month)
- Communications: Work with committee to spread the word
- Strategic Planning: Help define the direction of Our Daily Bread
- Nominating: Help discover new talent for the ODB Advisory Board
- Collection Drives
- Collect canned food, snack pack foods, and hygiene items
- Come and Visit
- Just come and visit. Homelessness is isolating. Start a game of chess or checkers. Discuss the latest book you read.
