Wayne’s Story
“I can’t say anything bad about Our Daily Bread; it’s all good!”
Wayne never imagined he would experience homelessness. He grew up on a ranch in East Texas, built a life in Hawaii helping the homeless, and later moved to Dallas. But financial and medical hardships left him with nowhere to turn. Seeking stability, he came to Denton, hoping for a second chance.
His first night on the streets was devastating. Alone and scared, Wayne considered ending his life. Instead, he walked into a coffee shop, tears streaming down his face. A compassionate barista noticed him and called a suicide hotline—saving his life. After a short inpatient stay, Wayne was referred to Our Daily Bread.
At Our Daily Bread, everything changed. Wayne entered our emergency shelter and worked with our Care Coordinator, who helped him apply for indigent health care, schedule doctor’s visits, and begin treatments for chronic health issues. While his health stabilized, he moved into our transitional wing and started working with a case manager to rebuild his future. “If it weren’t for Our Daily Bread, I would have died,” Wayne says. Wayne learned to budget, applied for social security, and received help with transportation. Our social workers provided emotional support, mental health resources, and counseling.
A pivotal moment came when Wayne met a volunteer from Victory World Outreach while working in the laundry room, who led him back to his faith. He began ministering to others, leading Bible studies at the shelter and at the coffee shop where he was saved. Now, Wayne is moving into permanent housing and working as a handyman. “I’m excited to cook my own meals and finally have a place to call home again,” he shares.
